Last Friday, The Jackson Laboratory announced that it had withdrawn its request for $100 million from the State of Florida to help build a research facility in Sarasota County. The decision was made after it became clear that the money simply wasn’t available in the state budget.
The Bar Harbor, Maine-based company makes most of its money by selling genetically engineered mice to laboratories around the world. In 2010, The Jackson Laboratory sold 2.9 million mice!
It is good news that public funds will not be used to support an expansion of animal research in Florida.
