Cruel circus an unwanted guest

The Cole Bros. Circus has begun its annual trip through Florida. The circus will perform today through Sunday at the Santa Rosa Mall in Mary Esther. On Monday, the circus moves down the road to the Destin Commons.colebros.jpg

The Cole Bros. Circus is currently traveling with several elephants under the control of trainer Tim Frisco. Mr. Frisco is infamous for undercover video footage that captured him beating elephants with bullhooks and shocking them with electric prods. In the video, Frisco is heard instructing other elephant trainers to, “Hurt ‘em! Make ‘em scream! … Sink that hook into ‘em … When you hear that screaming, then you know you got their attention!”

The circus is also traveling with a three-year-old elephant named “Val.” Val was taken prematurely from her mother and trained to do unnatural tricks. Baby elephants like Val would never naturally be separated from their mother; female elephants remain with their mothers for life. Premature separation causes stress and trauma for both mother and baby.

The Santa Rosa Mall and Destin Commons are not only allowing Cole Bros. to set up its tent in their parking lot, but they are selling tickets to the circus at the mall’s customer service offices.

Please contact both malls and ask them, in consideration of the lives of deprivation, confinement and abuse suffered by elephants and other animals in traveling circuses, not to support the circus. Contact:

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I’ve emailed them all with a civillized letter asking that they don’t allow animal circuses in their town for reasons of compassion, especially in light of the fact that Tim Frisco (I really can’t believe he’s still allowed to work around animals, how can this be?) will be part of the circus.
