veal_calf.jpgTim Mahoney is the only Florida Congressman on the House Agriculture Committee. During a committee meeting last week, Mahoney voted in favor of an amendment to the 2007 Farm Bill that grants $12 million in government subsidies to veal farmers.

Perhaps Congressman Mahoney is not aware that the majority of Americans oppose veal production on moral grounds. Veal consumption has steadily declined over the past 20 years.

Or maybe Congressman Mahoney did not know that most calves raised for veal are taken from their mothers immediately after birth, confined in crates so small that they cannot even turn around, and fed a diet deficient in iron and fiber to produce the anemic white meat known as “veal.”

Please contact Congressman Mahoney and express your disappointment at his vote in support of the cruel veal industry. It is especially important to contact Congressman Mahoney if you live in Florida’s 16th Congressional District (16th district includes Charlotte, Hendry, Highlands and Okeechobee counties, as well as portions of St. Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach counties.
