Hendry County monkey farm

prelabs-logo.JPG

In response to a request for records related to PreLabs, a Chicago-based contract research organization, Hendry County has provided ARFF with a copy of notes from a June 14 Planning and Zoning Department meeting about a proposed “nonhuman primate breeding facility” to be constructed on four plots of land off of State Road 80 near the community of Lehigh Acres.

The notes confirm information in a tip received by ARFF and the BUAV that revealed PreLabs’ intention to establish what would be the fourth private facility in Florida to breed monkeys for research and testing purposes (read our previous blog post here).

Before any ground is broken, the company behind the proposal will need to complete a site plan and an environmental assessment, and obtain building permits. ARFF will be closely following progress of the proposal, and we will work to make sure county leaders and residents of Hendry and Lee Counties understand exactly what the proposed facility would mean for them and for the thousands of monkeys who would be imprisoned there.

If you are a resident of Hendry or Lee County and would like to join us in speaking out against the proposed monkey farm, please contact ARFF.

“Atrocities are no less atrocities when they occur in laboratories and are called research. If you cannot attain to knowledge without torturing an animal, you must do without the knowledge.”
