Last month on this blog (here) we told you that Primate Products, a Miami-based importer of monkeys for use in experimentation and testing, had been awarded five contracts under the federal stimulus program to provide monkeys to researchers at the National Institutes of Health.
This week WFTX Fox 4 reported that the contracts have not created a single job in Florida (watch the report here). Fox 4 spoke to U.S. Representative Connie Mack who said, “This is what people are so frustrated about - that the government is spending money on things that the people don’t need, don’t want.” Rep. Mack has written to Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, urging a thorough review of the contracts.
The contracts also got the attention of U.S. Representatives Ted Deutch and Alcee Hastings. In their letter to Secretary Sebelius, Reps. Deutch and Hastings noted “serious and disturbing allegations of animal mistreatment” at Primate Products and asked for an immediate suspension of the Primate Products contracts. Contact HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and politely urge her to immediately suspend the contracts awarded to Primate Products under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, pending a thorough review.
